The SEDA Africa Group has lauded the potential of the Sissala East District to be self-sufficient and provide for other districts in the region.
At the invitation of the Sissala Union, the group met with the Chief, business leaders and representatives from Tumu of the Sissala District and called for the protection of the environment and communities.
The visit was aimed at establishing a partnership between the Czech Republic and the district to identify key developmental challenges and how Czech technology can be deployed to mitigate those challenges, facilitate sustainable growth of the district and attract the needed attention from various stakeholders.
The group also explored the local water resources, soybean and maise farms and livestock production, focusing on chicken production, and held meetings with local associations and entrepreneurs to understand their needs.
Among others, the visit afforded the group to witness first-hand the ecological and water conservation aspects, tree plantations and water retention for subsequent intensive farming giving birth to an all-year-round farming culture for sustainable livelihoods.
Joint discussions were also held to identify a suitable site for water retention during the rainy season with an estimated capacity of 1,000,000 m3 and the subsequent construction of an irrigation system for intensive soybean and maise production.
The project, expected to commence soon, would connect the district’s production system to soybean oil pressing, extruded feed production for poultry fattening, and downstream feed mixing plant for cattle, goats and sheep.
The group also added that modern agriculture will be incorporated into the entire process and treatment of all waste generated from production.
They believe this will ensure the sustainability and independence of the region from imports from other areas within the next five years.
As such, the total output of 5,000 tons of soybeans, 600 tons of cooking oil, 3,300 tons of extruded feed and an increase in chicken production to 800,000 chickens are expected as dividends of the output.
Following SEDA AFRICA GROUP’s visit to the Sissala district, both parties are expected to begin intensive preparations towards signing a Memorandum of Understanding that will lead to the execution of the entire project.
In tree and environmental protection, the representatives are developing a project to produce peanut husk briquettes to replace the wood from trees used intensively for heating, rapidly reducing the number of local trees.
The trade delegation’s visit will be concluded on Thursday, 13 April.
