Agriaccess Ghana Limited, an agricultural company in the Upper West Region capital of Wa, has given a full scholarship to Alex Kontondaba Lieyour to undertake a four-year university education.
Alex, who almost lost all hopes in climbing the academic ladder to the university, will now have a choice of attending any public university of his choice in Ghana with all school fees and accommodation paid and a monthly stipend of GH¢500 to take care of his needs.
Exactly two days after 3news.com had published a story about Alex Kontondaba Lieyour, a brilliant but needy student who is now serving on farms after his inability to pay for KNUST admission, individuals, philanthropists and companies have developed interest to sponsor him.
Agriaccess Ghana Limited, which supports farmers in production of food, has come in with a scholarship throughout his four-year university education in any public institution in Ghana.
The package covers tuition fee, which will be paid directly to the respective school, room and boarding fees, which will also be paid directly to the facility, and a monthly stipend to be paid to Alex for his upkeep.
At Tuolong, the remote community where Alex hails from, representatives of Agriaccess paid a visit to him and his family to present the scholarship letter to Kontondaba.
Scholarship Programs Coordinator of Agriaccess Ghana Limited Priscilla M. Achulo, while presenting the letter, admonished Alex Kontondaba Lieyour to take advantage of the scholarship in order to develop his community and Ghana as he wishes.
General Manager of Agriaccess Ghana Limited Prosper Achulo told us that one of their core principles is to transform lives in the communities whether through agriculture or education.
“If he becomes who he wants to become then he can also improve the community just like what we are doing.”
Alex Kontondaba Lieyour, who was full of joy, told 3news.com that he doesn’t know which words to use to thank Agriaccess for their support.
“Without them I don’t think maybe I could have succeeded, so I thank them very much and may God continue to replenish whatever they will lose in supporting me.”
Alex Kontondaba Lieyour completed the Lawra Senior High School in 2019 with aggregate 9 as the second best after he swapped General Science to offer General Arts.
He gained an automatic admission to KNUST to do Actuarial Science but he could not pay his admissions fees as his family is poor.
He was also the best in the 2016 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) in the Jirapa District with aggregate 9 and was given a citation from the district.
Alex, who didn’t have money to further his education, has been serving on farms to support his family take care of his siblings as the first child until 3news.com told his story, attracting support from the Member of Parliament for Jirapa Constituency Cletus Seidu Dapilah, who took lead to pledge to sponsor Alex’s education and has asked him to buy forms for Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and University of Ghana.
He also said Alex will be made to teach at his former JHS at Yagha to be paid a monthly allowance.
