An aggrieved “Chief” has come out to exonerate himself from the charges against the Omanhene for Gomoa Akyempim Traditional Council, after he was accused of indiscriminately conferring a Chieftaincy on him [Nana Okofo Ampofo] without proper consultations with the Traditional Council.
This was barely 24 hours after a press release issued by the Omanhemaa of the Obaatanpa Ama Eduwa I, Gomoa Assin in the Central Region, to suspend the services of the Omanhene, Obrifo Ahunako Ahor Ankobia II.
Nana Okofo Ampofo, the aggrieved “Chief”, who was appointed as the Oshehene (Boundary Chief) of the Gomoa Akyempim Traditional Area a few months to the destoolment petition against the Omanhene, has said that he was “engaged” to occupy the position of Boundary Chief pending various boundary issues across the traditional area.
He said, “For me, it was an honor to serve my people and protect the interests of future generations, so I accepted the call to duty with great joy and performed all necessary customary rites to that effect. Unfortunately, the Kingmakers, led by the Omanhemaa, issued many destoolment charges against the Omanhene.
One of the charges cited a breach of customs and practices for indiscriminately conferring a divisional role which is only attained through matrilineal inheritance, without proper consultations with the Gomoa Akyempim Traditional Council.
“It was a shock to me so I consulted with some learned advisers who confirmed that indeed it was a breach of custom and perhaps the reason for my delayed gazette.
“I humbly confronted the Omanhene to dialogue on the matter but he rather said I had created problems for him so he was withdrawing the position.”
The “Boundary Chief” has said that the Traditional Council is administratively weak and that the clarion call for reforms must be applauded.
“How can this happen under proper leadership? I haven’t had the opportunity to tell Obrifo that my issue is one of the many charges against him [Omanhene] so why I’m I to be blamed for all the allegations against him. I have seen the Press Statement by the Omanhemaa and Divisional Chiefs and I’m not surprised.
