Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey has been ruled out of Ghana’s 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers next month because of injury.
Black Stars coach Charles Akonnor named Partey in his provisional 30-man squad for Ethiopia and South Africa games despite the midfielder carrying a knee injury.
Akonnor was hoping Partey would recover on time to be involved in the games.
But Akonnor on Friday said Partey will not be available after speaking with the player and his Premier League club.
“I have contacted his club and Thomas Partey’s injury doesn’t look too good. We will only have to wish him a speedy recovery and expect him to return stronger,” Akonnor said in a press conference.
Partey picked up the injury during a pre-season friendly against Chelsea two weeks to the start of the season.
He missed Arsenal’s season opener against Brentford, which they lost 2-0 and has been ruled out of this weekend’s clash against Chelsea as well as West Brom and Manchester City matches before the international break.
The Gunners are optimistic of having a fully fit Partey after the break.
Meanwhile, Partey’s absence is a blow for Black Stars who have targeted two wins to take control of their qualification group that also contains Zimbabwe.
Black Stars will play Ethiopia in Cape Coast on September 3 before travelling to face South Africa on 6 September.
