Black Stars head coach Charles Akonnor on Friday named a 30-man squad for 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Ethiopia and South Africa.
The squad is dominated by foreign-based players with only five players based in Ghana named. Four of the five, however, play in the top-flight with the other coming from the second-tier.
Double winners Hearts of Oak deservedly have the most players with their goalkeeper Richard Attah and Afriyie Barnieh rewarded for their impressive performances.
Attah kept 16 clean sheets and Barnieh scored 12 goals as Hearts won both the Ghana Premier League and the MTN FA Cup for the first time in 20 years.
Ismail Ganiyu couldn’t help Kotoko win a trophy in the just-concluded season, but he has been included. It is his third call-up, having excelled in the previous two.
Dreams FC right-back Philemon Baffour concludes the Ghana Premier League quartet in the team.
And he is joined by Ghana U20 teammate Abdul Fatawu Issahaku of Division One side Steadfast United. The 17-year-old, the best player at the 2021 Africa U20 Cup of Nations, which Ghana won, returns to the Black Stars.
He will be hoping to make his first appearance for the Black Stars.
Black Stars will host Ethiopia on September 3 and then three days later take on South Africa in Johannesburg.
