Sulemanu Tetteh felt a huge relief after securing qualification to the Round of 16 of Boxing Men’s flyweight (48-52kg) at the Olympic Games in Tokyo.
Tetteh, who is Ghana’s General Captain at the Games, beat Dominican Republic’s R.Marte de la Rosa in a Round of 32 fight on Monday.
Tetteh won by a small margin to secure progress to keep alive his hope of winning a medal for Team Ghana in Japan.
The 28-year-old did not start well, hence a strong fightback was required and he delivered in the last two rounds to sway three of the five judges in his favour.
They scored the bout 3-2 for Sulemanu.
Tetteh must improve in his next bout against Yosvany Veitía of Cuba to stay in contention for a medal.
Team Ghana’s next event is on Wednesday, July 28 with three boxers Anani Kwadjo, Takyi Samuel and Samed Shakul all in action.
