Ghana captain Andre Ayew says Charles Akonnor has done a ‘fantastic job’ since he was appointed Black Stars head coach early last year.
Akonnor was in the dugout last Saturday for his eighth game, which ended goalless against Ivory Coast at the Cape Coast Stadium.
The disappointing result means Ghana failed to win any of this month’s international friendly games as they had been beaten 1-0 by Morocco in Rabat four days prior. In both games, could not score as a result of their blunt attack.
The results have left many in doubt as to whether Akonnor is capable of leading the team to success. Akonnor, who has recorded three wins, three defeats and two draws as Black Stars coach, has been tasked to win next year’s Africa Cup of Nations and qualify for the World Cup, with the qualifiers set to begin in September.
But, Ayew, who has scored more goals than any player in the Black Stars under Akonnor, thinks the former Ghana international has done enough to be commended.
“The coach has done a fantastic job you could see the progression of the squad, the plan behind it. Right now, we have to create chances,” Ayew said after the Ivory Coast stalemate.
The Black Stars were initially scheduled to start World Cup qualifiers this month, but Caf postponed the games due to coronavirus concerns.
Akonnor’s side will open their account in the first week of September against Ethiopia, and Ayew has targeted a perfect start.
“Now we have to get ready for Ethiopia because it is a must-win game. Lately, in the national team, my goal scoring record has been good, and I need to keep it going. What is next important for me is to get ready for Ethiopia and that is my target,” he added.
The 31-year-old has been capped 94 times and scored 19 goals for Ghana.
