A former Chairman of the Greater Accra Region branch of the Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists (GAMLS) has hinted at a suspension of the nationwide strike action following calls on members to return to the negotiation table.
Speaking on The Keypoints on TV3/3FM on Saturday, May 29, Dr Franklin Nii Armah assured that they will do the needful in order to get their grievances addressed.
The laboratory scientists at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) started it all by embarking on a sit-down strike to protest the posting of two physicians to the Haematology Unit.
After their protests were seemingly ignored by management of KATH, the laboratory scientists courted the sympathy of the national membership of the Association, which declared an indefinite strike on Thursday, May 27.
The strike has, however, been declared illegal by the National Labour Commission (NLC), which on Friday, May 28 secured an ex-parte injunction from an Accra High Court to stop the striking laboratory scientists.
Dr Nii Armah, in indicating no official knowledge of the court injunction, urged the rank and file of the Association to heed to various concerns and “do the needful”.
But he indicated that some of the laboratory scientists may have taken advantage of the strike and travelled far from their posts and so they all need to assemble before announcing their next step.
He said their issue is not about “bread and butter” but about respect to be accorded the laboratory scientists.
“The issue is about who to lead in the laboratory and who to manage the laboratory,” he said, insisting that their mandate and roles are sanctioned by law and not at the discretion of anybody.
