Black Stars captain Andre Ayew has taken “full responsibility” for the team’s “unacceptable” early exit from the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) in Egypt.
Ghana crashed out of the tournament after losing on penalties to Tunisia at the round of 16 stage.
It was the first time since 2008 that the team failed to reach the semi-finals.
“I take full responsibility for that campaign as the captain it was unacceptable and we have spoken about this as a team,” he told BBC.
“I still hurt from that but as captain, the pain is good because it’s pain that doesn’t just go away it’s a pain that reminds us that we owe our people the trophy or at least our all.
Ayew will lead the Black Stars again next year for the delayed tournament in Cameroon.
“We have qualified for Cameroon and we have to prepare and be ready because we have a very good core now and with this core and a little guidance and sacrifice-we can finally achieve our aim.”
Black Stars haven’t won the Afcon since 1982 when they lifted their fourth trophy.
