Ghana Premier League commentator Nana Darkwa Gyasi is surprised by Legon Cities poor form this season despite their huge investment.
The club invested millions of cedis in player acquisitions as they signed legendary striker Asamoah Gyan and experienced goalkeeper Fatau Dauda. They also have in their fold Hans Kwofie, Baba Mahama, Jonah Attuquaye, Michael Ampadu and Elvis Opoku. These are players who have been playing the local league for a long time.
While their coach is Bashir Hayford, former Ghana Premier League winner with Asante Kotoko and Legon Cities.
Many expected them to challenge for the title, but instead, they are fighting against relegation. Legon are currently in the relegation zone with 11 matches to go.
There are reports of former Kotoko coach Maxwell Konadu replacing Bashir Hayford in the coming days, but Gyasi doesn’t believe their problem has to do with coaching.
He is convinced the club will continue to decline even under world-renowned Jose Mourinho, who recently signed a long-term deal with Italian side AS Roma.
“Something is fundamentally wrong with how they approach their matches. You can bring Mourinho and these guys will still not flourish,” he said on the maiden edition of WarmUp Plus on TV3.
Nana Darkwa Gyasi, formerly of Radio Gold, touched on Inter Allies, who are languishing at the bottom of the league. It is surprising to see Allies there, having set high standards since they got promoted in 2013.
The ace sports journalist insists Inter Allies are getting what they deserve, highlighting the team’s poor planning.
“Inter Allies are dead and gone,” he responded to the question if the club would survive.
“They failed to plan. You don’t sell your biggest asset and you fail to replace him and still think you can climb up the log. Victorien Adebayor was their best player, best goal scorer. They let him go, they didn’t replace him with a competent striker.
They made a lot of their players go [on loan]. Until they found themselves at the bottom of the log they decided to recall them from Europe. By the time they came, harm has already been caused,” he added.
Nana Darkwa Gyas’s co-guest on the show was high life musician Kofi Kinaata. Gyasi was impressed to learn that Kinaata has set up a colts team to nurture talent. He advised the award-winning singer to look at the business aspect because it’s a huge prospect in which he can make more money.
