A heavy rainstorm on Monday evening has rendered hundreds of residents of Akyem Oda township and its environs homeless.
Three basic schools – Oda Newtown Presby, AEA Basic School and Anglican Basic School – and the Attafuah Senior High School were also affected, resulting in some students being hospitalized.
The rainstorm lasted for about 30 minutes, 3news.com gathered.
Buildings have had roofs removed and portions destroyed.
The students hospitalized are said to be in stable conditions now.
Several victims had to put up with relatives or close-by neighbours.
Officials of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) are still assessing the situation to know the extent of devastation and the numbers involved before assistance can be provided.
The Birim Central Municipality Director of the Organisation, David Okyere, says they were still assessing the situation to have a figure of the persons affected.
Mr Okyere described the disaster as first of a kind in the history of Akyem Oda.
The Member of Parliament for the Akyem Oda Constituency, Alexander Akwasi Acquah, has visited the area to have first-hand information and provide some assistance to victims.
He asked NADMO officials to immediately provide a temporary facility for the stranded victims.
