Ghana has received 50,000 additional AstraZeneca vaccines from India, 3news.com has gathered.
This adds to the 600,000 doses received on Wednesday, February 24 from the Serum Institute of India through COVAX.
Ghana became the first country to receive the vaccines in the fight against the deadly coronavirus disease.
The African nation won praise from around the world for taking delivery of the vaccines.
“From the start, we have committed to making our vaccine available to as many countries as possible and at no profit during the pandemic because no-one is safe until everyone is safe,” the Chief Executive Officer of AstraZeneca, Pascal Soriot, stated.
The country began mass vaccination on Tuesday in the Greater Accra and Greater Kumasi metropolitan areas.
The exercise has been phased into segments of the population. It is scheduled to end on Monday, March 15.
Among the first segment of the population that have so far received the doses are health workers, adults 60 years and over, people with underlying health conditions, frontline executive, legislature, judiciary and their related staff, frontline security personnel, some religious leaders, essential workers and teachers.
Speaking on 3FM‘s Community Connect on Friday, March 5, the Programmes Manager of the Expanded Programme on Immunisation (EPI) of the Ghana Health Service, Dr Kwame Amponsah-Achiano, said the procurement of the additional doses will see more Ghanaians inoculated.
He said the citizens will continue to be given jabs if the next tranche of doses are received before the current tranche ends.
