District Chief Executive (DCE) for Gomoa Central in the Central Region Benjamin Otoo has said the district is poised to end the double-track system in high schools in the next academic year.
The Assembly, according to Mr. Otoo, has embarked upon construction of multiple-unit classroom blocks at various basic schools and Gomoa Jaman Senior High School to enhance the Free SHS Policy.
The DCE is optimistic the projects, which are at various stages of completion, would soon be ready for commissioning to help end the double-track system in the district.
In an interview on Mantam Mpuntuo on Onua FM on Thursday, July 30, Mr Otoo revealed the district has only two senior high schools namely Gomoa Jaman SHS and Gyedom SHS and because of the additional infrastructural projects, the schools would be able end the double-track system when they reopen.
Mr. Otoo told the host, Nana Yaw Opare, that Gyedom SHS is a private school but has since the introduction of the Free SHS policy been assisted by the government to enhance secondary school education in the area.
He noted Gomoa Jaman SHS has been provided with a dining hall so that students could enjoy the Free Day Students feeding programme whilst Gyedom SHS and other basic schools have been provided with school furniture.
Accessibility to education in the area, according to the DCE, was easier said than done.
The Assembly through the MP’s common fund, District Common Fund and the Scholarship Secretariat has supported over 500 people in school including artisanship.
Additionally, the Assembly has supported SHS students with mattresses, trunks and school chop boxes particularly to those whose parents could not afford these items for their children, he noted.
Mr. Otoo thus described the Free SHS policy as a programme which has really impacted the society in education especially in the rural areas.
He applauded the government for supporting the district in education and other sectors in ensuring massive development at the local level.
