TUC calls off May Day celebrations due to coronavirus

Ghana’s Trades Union Congress (TUC) has cancelled all activities planned for this year’s International Workers’ Day of Solidarity, May Day.

The activities would have been climaxed in Accra on Friday, May 1.

But a statement issued on Tuesday by TUC’s Secretary General, Dr Yaw Baah, said the celebration has been cancelled in compliance with the Imposition on Restrictions Act, 2020, which has been in force since March 30, 2020 in Accra, Kasoa, Tema and Kumasi.

The TUC said as characteristic of May Day celebrations, the Organised Labour National May Day Planning Committee had planned nationwide parades across the regional capitals.

But the exigencies of the time, precisely the scourge of coronavirus, has forced a cancellation of all activities.

“We urge all workers to stay at home on May Day and continue to comply with all the relevant safety protocols in the fight against coronavirus,” Dr Baah said in the statement.

“We hope to resume the celebration of May Day in 2021.”

He used the opportunity to congratulate all health workers, utility workers, security agencies, and other essential service providers “for their invaluable service to the nation in these difficult times”.

Workers in most government organisations have been rostered in an attempt to ensure social distancing.
