Round One of the polio vaccination exercise began in five regions on Wednesday, September 25 and scheduled to end on Saturday, September 28.
The vaccination exercise targets all children Under 5.
The Zero Round began from 11 September and ended on 14 September.
At a stakeholders meeting to update the media on measures put in place by the Ghana Health Service and its partners on how it’s addressing the reported cases of polio in the country, Greater Accra Regional Director of Health Services, Dr Charity Sarpong, indicated the service has intensified surveillance.
“In order to prevent further transmission, a comprehensive response that includes communication, advocacy and social mobilization on vaccination environmental hygiene is been intensified.”
The meeting also looked at ways the media can help in educating the populace on polio and how people can prevent it.
Dr. Sarpong noted the polio vaccine can be given multiple times and urged parents to have their children vaccinated to help Ghana’s quest to eradicate polio.
“Polio vaccine given multiple times can protect a child for life.”
She further added that they have put measure in place to address the challenges encountered during the Round Zero vaccination exercise.
Ghana for the past ten years has been polio free.
However, on 17 August this year a case was confirmed at Chereponi in the Northern Region.
Round One of the polio vaccination exercise would cover five regions namely the Greater Accra, Northern, North East, Upper East and Savannah regions.
Polio is an infectious disease which may affect the spinal cord causing muscle weakness and paralysis.
