One hundred and thirty health and environmental health professionals have been trained to embark on mass mosquito larvae spraying exercise in a bid to substantially reduce mosquito breeding in the Central Region.
The trainees were made up of reps from Zoomlion, environmental health officers and managers from the various municipal and district assemblies, district and municipal malaria focal persons, NAMCOP spraying gang leaders and community sprayers.
Ghana is currently using larvaecide to destroy the larvae of all kinds of mosquitoes to prevent them from growing and multiplying.
Waste management giant Zoomlion Ghana Limited partnered the Ministry of Health, the Ghana Health Service and the Nugochi Memorial Institute for Medical Research to train the professionals in the new approach.
A senior entomologist at the Noguchi, Dr. Samuel Dadzie underscored the importance of larvaeciding in Ghana’s fight against mosquito breeding to help eliminate malaria.
He was optimistic that the caliber of persons trained will impact positively on the control of mosquito breeding at the community level.
Social and Behaviour Change Communications Specialist of the National Malaria Control Program, Mr Kwame Dzudzorli Gaskpey, urged the participants to consider the key players in their communities in delivering their messages to the people.
He said consideration must also be taken of the people’s demography for them to be able to deliver the message more effectively.
The Director of Scientific Operations of the Pan-African Mosquito Control Association (PAMCA) Dr. Silas Majambere, who is the lead consultant of the programme, said larvaeciding has proven to be the most effective malaria control intervention to reduce mosquito breeding.
He took participants through the process of mapping among others.
Some of the participants were optimistic the rigorous nature of the training will produce positive results in Ghana’s efforts to reduce the spread of mosquitoes.
