The state-of-the-art plant located at the newly created Accra Waste Recovery Parl on the mortuary road, has a high material recovery rate of up to 90 per cent of mixed waste and the ability to process 200 metric tones of waste a day.
It is a collaboration between Zoomlion, which is a subsidiary of the Jospong Group of Companies and its European partner, Komptech Austria.
Mrs Abena Dapaah toured the facility could not hide her excitement about the innovation that has been introduced in the country by the Jospong Group.
She indicated that government has been encouraging bbusinessmen and the youth to venture into waste recycling as it is the only sustainable way of managing our waste.
She said it was welcoming and commendable that after her Ministry met with waste management operators in the country to discuss the need to venture into waste recycling, Zoomlion has taken up the mantle.
Government, he said, will continue to provide the needed environment and stimulus packages for private businesses to triumph.
Manager for the plant, Emmanuel Oteng who conducted the Minister around the facility, said the facility has the capacity to process 100 metric tonnes of organic compost per day.
This feat, he said, would save the government from importing over 864,000 bags of chemical fertilizers into Ghana annually, noting it will be a boost for the local economy and encourage organic food farming in Ghana..
He said the socio-economic and job creation benefits of the facility are enormous as the plant will provide direct and indirect employment for over 1,000 youth.
Fifteen other similar plants are expected to be installed in the remaining 15 regions.
Meanwhile, government has allotted Ghc 197 million for drainage works across the country, including the dredging of the choked drains in Accra which has been causing flooding in parts of Accra.
The Minister said the local authorities will not hesitate to deal with persons who are caught disposing waste indiscriminately at unauthorized places once the de-silting is done.
“It looks like we are having early rains and the country must be prepared for the force majeure. We must be grateful to God for rains, unfortunately, rains can cause havoc,” Mrs Abena Dapaah said.
