[Photos] Day one of Kofi Annan’s 3-day state funeral

The three-day state funeral and burial rites for former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan began in Accra, Tuesday,  September 11,  at the Accra International Conference Centre where hundreds of Ghanaians turned up and filed past his body to pay their last respect.

Mr. Annan who served two terms as the UN chief died Saturday August 18, 2018 in a hospital at Bern, Switzerland, after a short illness.

Day one of the funeral as narrated by our reporters was largely a success, except that many were somewhat disappointed that the casket was not opened for the viewing public to see the dead body.

There are also speculations in sections of the media the casket could be empty, but a journalist at Media General in a feature posted on 3news.com questions if someone really cares if the casket is really empty.

Dignitaries including recognised groups, chiefs, Members of Parliament and Ministers of State will have their turn to pay their last respect to the illustrious international diplomat on Wednesday.

A solemn burial service will be held on Thursday, September 13 at the Accra International Conference Centre.

Several Heads of State, UN officials and diplomatic delegations will join the family for the burial service.
