Former Ghana High Commissioner to the United Kingdom and a leading member of the John Mahama campaign team, Victor Smith, has cast doubts on the genuineness of the electoral victory of the NPP in 2016.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) won the 2016 general elections by a landslide, leaving the NDC in their trail with 44.4 per cent of the total valid votes cast.
The NDC has since engaged in activities, including Unity Walks, aimed at reorganizing the party for the next general elections in 2020.
The most recent development is the declaration of intents by candidates to contest the flagbearership of the party.
Former President John Dramani Mahama on Thursday declared his intention to join the race, a move critics say is wrong considering the margin with which he lost as an incumbent.

‘Something untoward happened’
But speaking on 3FM’s Sunrise, the former diplomat thinks the outcome of the election was suspicious, citing an announcement by the Electoral Commission, then, that its system has been compromised.
Mr. Smith said the complaints of the EC makes him believe “something untoward happened” even though he added, “I’m not in the position [and] I do not have what it takes to investigate”.
Mr. Smith would not give a direct response to whether he meant the election was rigged but rather insisted “something untoward happened”.
He described as lies the campaign promises of the then opposition NPP in the run-up to the general election.
According to him, the NPP was merely making promises to excite voters and they are now finding it difficult to implement them.
“I think they lied their way with all the stories they said and now it’s coming back to them to know that all the things that they said to excite the electorate are not exactly so.”
Mr. Smith has also hinted that former presidential staffer, Stan Dogbe, is likely to be reassigned a different role in the NDC.
