Director of the Confucius Institute at University of Cape Coast Professor, Hu Liangtai has expressed his outfit’s commitment to strengthen China-Ghana relationship in the area of education by providing higher learning opportunities to Ghanaian students.
Speaking at Hunan City University in China, he indicated that Ghana tops in the number of students from Africa studying in China on scholarship with about 7000 students entering yearly.
In 2008, Hunan City University in China and the University of Cape Coast (UCC) signed an agreement for an exchange programme between the two universities.
The two universities submitted a joint proposal to Hanban, headquarters of Confucius Institute for an establishment of a branch of the Institute at the University of Cape Coast.
Top 19 student-member delegation from Confucius Institute at UCC is at Hunan City University in China, for a three week exchange programme sponsored by Hanban, the second of its kind between the two universities.
Speaking to 3News in China, the Director of Confucius Institute at UCC, Professor Hu Liangtai praised Ghanaian students for their performance on the African continent stating that Ghana leads in the number of African students studying on scholarship in China.
The director assured that Confucius Institute, UCC will further work hard to increase scholarship opportunities for its students, a move which is in accordance with SDGS 4.
“Confucius Institute, Hanban is doing its best to increase the study opportunities for its students in line with achieving global goals for sustainable development,”‘ he added, saying the Institute had gained grounds in the Central Region of Ghana.
“The Central Region is increasingly becoming a centre for Confucius studies. In various academic institutions, there are free classes for basic, high and tertiary students.”
Ingrid Yieviel Kuupole, a member of the Ghanaian delegation told 3news.com that as China is the second in the world’s economy, the partnership between the two universities is a good cause.
Speaking on behalf of Hunan City University, Zhou Huimin a student volunteer, indicated the exchange will not only strengthen the relationship between the two universities but also between the two countries.
This move is in line with SDG 17 target 16 which promotes global partnership for sustainable development by supporting the achievement of all the goals.
The relationship between the People’s Republic of China and the Republic of Ghana dates back to 1960 when the two countries first established diplomatic relations.
