Presidential aspirant of the National Democratic Congress, Sylvester Mensah has flawed the numerous ‘Unity Walk’ organised by the party as lacking the ingredients necessary for unification.
Though the exercise has been held in several regional capitals of the country, the process was held upside down in his observation.
The unity walk has previously been criticised by some bigwigs of the NDC who claimed the exercise was secretly sponsored by former President John Mahama to keep him in the limelight whilst others felt was to give him leverage over persons who want to contest the party’s presidential slot.
The leadership has however, flatly, rejected the claims, saying it was purely to unite the party ahead of the 2020 general elections after its abysmal performance in the 2016 elections that left many of the party members disgruntled.
But speaking to Johnnie Hughes on TV3’s NewDay Thursday, Sylvester Mensah analysed, “you only talk about unity when you have gone through the competitive process of re-organisation”.
According to Mr. Mensah, the unity walk should have been preceded by elections at the branch, constituency, regional and national levels.
“These competitions generate winners and losers, and so dissatisfaction, acrimony and all that sets in, it is only after that, that you can seek to generate unity towards 2020 elections, but this was like putting the cart before horse.”
He was emphatic that the timing was wrong in terms of what should come first.
“I felt we began from the end rather than from the beginning,” he explained.
This perhaps explains the reason why Sylvester Mensah did not “exactly” participate in the unity walk.
The only time he went to the walk, he said, was to “observe” and “ascertain” how unifying the exercise was.
“I thought it is completely out of place, the nomenclature, unity was completely bankrupt,” the former National Health Insurance Authority boss asserted.
Mr. Mensah who spoke on a wide range of issues about the NDC said he has been motivated by the overwhelming endorsements from the rank and file of the party to lead the party into the 2020 general elections.
