Some selected students in the Sekondi-Takoradi metropolis and Effia-Kwesimintsim municipality have been trained in how to use waste to create artifacts as part of a campaign to ensure litter-free Western Region.
The selected students, drawn from Tessark School, Granny’s School and Angel Grace School Complex, were subsequently given the opportunity to turn waste materials collected from their environment, into artifacts.
They used waste from plastics, fabrics, papers and egg shells among others to create beads, flower pots, picture frames, plastic bags, sandals, stationery holders and miniature houses among other things including learning materials.Under the campaign “No Litter Generation,” a Takoradi-based NGO, Advocate and Trainers for Children and Women’s Advancement and Rights (ATCWAR) is seeking to inculcate in the people, the need to cease indiscriminate littering of their environment.National Coordinator of World Children’s Prize Ghana and the CEO of ACTWAR, Ekua Ansah Eshun explained the campaign seeks to discourage littering as well as groom young people to turn waste to usable products which fetch them income.
“Waste is everywhere and it is breeding ailments and it is expensive that’s why you young ones are here today to display the wastes you have recycled after the training. These items can also generate income for you, home and school” she said.
