Wife of Dr. Hilla Liman, Ghana’s only president under the Third Republic, has revealed that things were not easy for herself and her family after the overthrow of her husband in 1981.
In an exclusive interview with the former first lady, Fulera Hilla Liman, as a build up to Mothers Day, she told Media General’s Sarah Parku ‘‘We were worst off after the overthrow of my husband as president of the third republic 37 years ago’’.
Dr. Hilla Liman was elected President of Ghana on the ticket of the People’s National Party (PNP).
He was the President from September 24, 1979 to December 31, 1981, when he was overthrown by the J J Rawlings-led Provisional National Defense Council (PNDC).
According to the former first lady, the overthrow of her husband occasioned great difficulties that she took to farming vegetables and a tie-and-dye business to fend for her family because her husband was jobless after his overthrow.
She tells Sarah her husband Dr. Hilla Liman could not apply for a job anywhere after his overthrow so she had to come in handy to support the family.
“After the overthrow of my husband’s government, I was the sole bread winner and it was not easy so I was running around and doing all, their father was jobless so I have to provide for the family.”
Mrs. Hilla Liman says even though she does not regret supporting her late husband to serve the nation, she thinks Ghanaians did not give him the chance to prove himself.
She said she was not comfortable with her husband’s decision to contest for the presidency of the country in the first place because of the uncertainties involved.
“When he wanted to do it [that’s contest for presidency] initially I was not happy and I had young young children and he had a good work, he was a diplomat, so why do you risk to leave that and go to a place that you are not sure of? And that is exactly what happened, my fear, it came to pass”, she recounted.
She is however grateful that she has been able to raise all her children to higher levels.
“What else could I have done? I just thank my Lord, they [her children] have all made it, none of them is without Masters ”, she said.
She urges all mothers to be patient with their children and give them necessary attention for a healthy upbringing.
“Whichever difficulties you have, whatever you are going through with your children I will always say that they should be patient and try as much as possible and make themselves available. When we do not give them that attention then they try to find the attention somewhere. They need the love and attention”, she advised.
