La Cote d’Ivoire did try to bring Togo and Benin into the maritime border dispute it had with Ghana, a former Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) has disclosed.
The Ivorian authorities wanted the equidistance approach by Ghana rejected by ITLOS, Tsatsu Tsikata narrates, so that the outcome does not have negative consequences on the Ghana-Togo maritime border.
But the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea cleared the air that the adjudicating for the implementation of only the two neighbouring countries, the astute lawyer said.
He added that the Special Chamber of ITLOS said the judgement was exclusive of Togo and Benin, in the case of Ghana, and Liberia, in the case of La Cote d’Ivoire.
La Cote d’Ivoire also shifted goal posts on the approach to use on four different occasions, he revealed, before finally settling on the Angle Bisector method.
Mr Tsikata made the revelations on TV3’s Agenda on Sunday.
